This had been dropped / bashed and the casing had been damaged, causing the on / off button not to work at all. Stripped the machine apart and re-located a dis-lodged spring, gave the machine a thorough clean and re-assembled it. It was perfectly fine after. I could have kept the hair I managed to get out of it and made a wig for my bald head, but I didn't, ah well.
