This thing would seem to please itself in operation and would often suddenly stop, usually at the bottom of the pool. It turned out, that the motor housing had a defective seal and water / cleaning salt solution had 'crusted' everything inside. After a bit of a deep clean and some sealant, got things back to normal again.
